Disulfiram

Dosage and Directions

Disulfiram is taken orally once daily, usually in the morning. The typical dose ranges from 250 mg to 500 mg per day, depending on the patient’s response. Treatment should start at least 12 hours after the last alcoholic drink.

Precautions

Before starting disulfiram, inform your doctor if you have liver disease, heart conditions, diabetes, epilepsy, or mental health disorders. Avoid all forms of alcohol, including hidden sources like mouthwash, sauces, and certain medications. Patients should be aware of the risks of severe reactions if alcohol is consumed during treatment.

Contraindications

Disulfiram is contraindicated in individuals with severe heart disease, psychosis, or known hypersensitivity to the drug. It should not be used in patients who are currently intoxicated or without their knowledge and consent.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include drowsiness, headache, metallic or garlic-like taste, and skin rash. If alcohol is consumed, symptoms like flushing, nausea, vomiting, palpitations, and low blood pressure may occur. Severe reactions can include respiratory distress, cardiovascular collapse, and seizures.

Drug Interaction

Disulfiram interacts with metronidazole, isoniazid, phenytoin, and anticoagulants like warfarin. Alcohol-containing products should be strictly avoided. Inform your doctor of all medications and supplements being used.

Missed Dose

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as remembered unless it’s close to the next dose. Do not double up. Consistent daily use is important for effectiveness.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose include severe drowsiness, nausea, vomiting, and neurological symptoms. Seek emergency medical attention immediately. Treatment is supportive.

Storage

Store at room temperature, away from heat, moisture, and light. Keep out of reach of children and do not use expired medication.
