Amoxicillin

Common Use

Amoxicillin is a broad-spectrum penicillin antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections such as respiratory tract infections, ear infections, urinary tract infections, and skin infections. It is also used to treat Helicobacter pylori in combination therapy for stomach ulcers. Amoxicillin works by inhibiting bacterial cell wall synthesis, leading to bacterial death.

Dosage and Directions

Amoxicillin is taken orally, usually 2–3 times a day, with or without food. The dose depends on the type and severity of infection, as well as patient age and kidney function. It’s important to complete the full course even if symptoms improve early.

Precautions

Tell your doctor if you have a history of allergic reactions to penicillin or other beta-lactam antibiotics. Use cautiously in patients with kidney impairment. Prolonged use may lead to secondary infections like oral thrush or yeast infections.

Contraindications

Amoxicillin is contraindicated in individuals with a known allergy to penicillin or cephalosporins. It should be avoided in patients with infectious mononucleosis due to high risk of skin rash. Severe liver dysfunction may also require alternative treatment.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include nausea, diarrhea, skin rash, and headache. Serious reactions may include anaphylaxis, Clostridium difficile-associated diarrhea, or liver enzyme elevation. Report any signs of allergic reaction, such as swelling or difficulty breathing.

Drug Interaction

Amoxicillin may interact with oral contraceptives (reducing their effectiveness), allopurinol (increased risk of rash), and anticoagulants like warfarin (increased bleeding risk). Always inform your doctor about all medications you are taking.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose to make up for the missed one.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, or crystalluria (crystals in urine). In severe cases, kidney function may be affected. Seek medical help immediately if an overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store amoxicillin capsules or tablets at room temperature away from moisture and heat. Liquid suspension should be refrigerated and used within the prescribed time. Keep out of reach of children.
