Irbesartan

Common Use

Irbesartan is used to treat high blood pressure (hypertension) and to protect kidney function in patients with type 2 diabetes. It belongs to a class of drugs known as angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARBs), which help relax blood vessels and improve blood flow.

Dosage and Directions

Take Irbesartan by mouth once daily, with or without food, as directed by your doctor. The dosage is based on your medical condition and response to treatment.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have kidney, liver, or heart problems, or are on a low-sodium diet. Avoid becoming dehydrated, especially during exercise or hot weather, as this may increase the risk of low blood pressure.

Contraindications

Do not use Irbesartan if you are allergic to it or any of its components. It is contraindicated during pregnancy and should not be used with aliskiren in patients with diabetes.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include dizziness, fatigue, and low blood pressure. Serious but rare effects include kidney dysfunction and high potassium levels.

Drug Interaction

Irbesartan may interact with potassium supplements, diuretics, NSAIDs, and lithium. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it's almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one—do not double the dose.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose may include severe dizziness or fainting due to low blood pressure. Seek immediate medical attention if an overdose is suspected.

Storage

Store Irbesartan at room temperature, away from moisture and heat. Keep the medication in its original packaging and out of reach of children.
