Salbutamol

Common Use

Salbutamol is a fast-acting bronchodilator used to relieve and prevent symptoms of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and other breathing disorders. It works by relaxing the muscles in the airways and improving airflow to the lungs. It is often used during asthma attacks for quick relief.

Dosage and Directions

Salbutamol is usually administered via inhaler, nebulizer, tablets, or syrup, depending on the patient’s age and condition. For inhalers, the usual dose is one or two puffs every 4 to 6 hours as needed. Follow your doctor’s instructions carefully, and do not exceed the recommended dose.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, seizures, or an overactive thyroid. Salbutamol may increase heart rate or cause tremors, especially at higher doses. Use with caution in children and the elderly.

Contraindications

Do not use salbutamol if you are allergic to it or to any of its components. It is not suitable for use as the sole therapy in severe or unstable asthma. Patients with a history of hypersensitivity reactions to adrenergic drugs should avoid its use.

Possible Side Effects

Common side effects include headache, dizziness, nervousness, tremors, and increased heart rate. Less common but serious effects may include chest pain, irregular heartbeat, or allergic reactions. Seek medical help if you experience difficulty breathing, swelling, or rash.

Drug Interaction

Salbutamol may interact with beta-blockers, diuretics, MAO inhibitors, and tricyclic antidepressants. Combining it with other stimulant medications may increase side effects. Always inform your doctor about all medications and supplements you are taking.

Missed Dose

If a dose is missed, take it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for the next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose to catch up. For inhalers used as needed, take only when symptoms occur.

Overdose

Overdose may result in symptoms such as chest pain, fast heartbeat, seizures, or severe nervousness. In case of overdose, seek emergency medical attention. Treatment is supportive and based on symptoms.

Storage

Store salbutamol inhalers at room temperature, away from heat and moisture. Keep tablets or syrup tightly closed and out of reach of children. Do not puncture or burn inhaler canisters, even when empty.
